News from the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona

By Carsten Barth | February 13, 2008

mwc-blog.jpgThis year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona had a good start with a trend to record breaking visitor attendance.

Mobile advertising and commercial opportunities are the hot topics and many of the top players focusing on this. Nokia’s initiative has created a Carrier Grade Media network that scales mobile advertising for the operator community. This could help to overcome the fragmented and local advertising offerings for up to 2.7 billion mobile devices. “In a world where it’s increasingly difficult for brands to forge relationships with consumers” says Floris Van-De-Klashorst of Nokia, “the mobile internet presents a great opportunity, and operators have the data to offer brands highly relevant, brand-save advertising.”

Sony Ericsson announced that they aim to become the word’s third biggest mobile handset manufacturer by 2011. “We are launching many new products to broaden our portfolio,” Sony Ericsson’s President Hideki Komiyama told in the show.

Mobile agenda goes green

Operators like China Mobile announced to introduce several initiatives to for example reduce their electricity usages. The key aim is to become an environmental friendly company. To achieve these goals operators team up with the network equipment manufacturers like Nokia Siemens Networks, Ericsson, Alcatel-Lucent, Huawei and others. Not to forget the handling of old mobile phones and old batteries. Nokia’s CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo states: “Something has to change, we must move to a more sustainable model including recycling and lower power usage.”

The GSM Association (GSMA) is the global trade association representing more than 700 GSM mobile phone operators across 218 countries and territories of the world. In addition, more than 200 manufacturers and suppliers support the Association’s initiatives as key partners.
