Mobile World Congress 2009: Universal Phone Charging at 2012, Global Mobile Awards Winners
One-size-fits-all Phone Charger by 2012
The new Universal Charging Solution (UCS) announced by the GSMA on Tuesday, aims to make life easier for consumers by providing a mobile phone charger that will work with the majority of new handsets by 2012. The world’s top five handset manufacturers are among the group of companies to have pledged their support for this development. This agreement will lead to 50 % less chargers being manufactured each year. The new charger is also targeting a 50 % reduction in standby energy consumption and a three times more energy efficiency than the current chargers.
Rob Conway, CEO of GSMA highlighted the role of mobile industry in lifting the world out of recession. “We are on of the few sectors that is well positioned to weather the downturn and our industry is arguably on of government’s best answers to that downturn, in generating jobs, innovation, productivity and high technology, and doing so in a more environmentally sensitive way,” said Conway, noting that the mobile sector was one of the few industries that has not required a government bailout during the downturn.
The 14th annual Global Mobile Awards were held on Tuesday at the National Place in Barcelona. The awards showcased the innovation and the very best in the mobile industry in 2008. More than 900 senior executives and mobile industry leaders were present in the event. Here are some of the winners:
