Mobile World Congress 2009: Solar-Powered Devices and LTE Plans Hit the Headlines
Event organizer estimates that the total attendee numbers in this year’s Mobile World Congress will approach 50,000 with more than 1,300 exhibitors. It shows that MWC remains as a must-attend show despite the global economic slowdown. Green has been visible in many parts of the show as a large number of green strategic initiatives have been implemented at this year’s show, and many green topics have been covered in the conference program.
Low-Cost Colar-Powered Handset from ZTE
ZTE introduced a low-cost solar-powered mobile phone that is intended to hit the market of some 1.6 billion people worldwide with limited access to power. The Coral-200-Solar will retail at under 40 US Dollars, and as little as 1 hour of sunlight claims to give 15 minutes of talk time. It will first appear in Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Vanuatu and Tonga in June. LG and Samsung unveiled their solar-powered already earlier this week.
iPhone Runs with Solar Power
Freeplay Energy introduced a solar power case for charging the iPhone. The TuffCharge is a solar charging case that allows users to charge their iPhones in ordinary daylight conditions. Exposing the case to an hour of sunlight during the day can add up to 60 minutes of talk for the original iPhone or up to 30 minutes for the 3G version.
Converged LTE Devices in Sight
Three of the world’s largest mobile operators – China Mobile, Verizon Wireless and Vodafone – announced a statement noting that their joint laboratory tests from last 12 months have now proven that the technology is capable of operating effectively in both unpaired (TDD) and paired (FDD) spectrum. This means that the potential availability of devices that can support both TDD and FDD versions of LTE technology has taken a big step forward.
Verizon Reveals LTE Plans
Verizon Communications revealed its LTE deployment plans by announcing it has chosen Alcatel-Lucent and Ericsson as winners of its all important RAN contracts. Starent Network will be a packet core network supplier. NSN and Alcatel-Lucent will be the key suppliers of IMS kit.
The deployment of LTE is going to make Verizon Wireless the first operator worldwide to commercially launch the next-generation technology.
Skype has made a deal with Nokia whereby its application will be integrated into Nokia’s SmartPhones starting with the N-series. Nokia’s N97 model including Skype will be in the market on the third quarter of 2009.
