Elcoteq Marks 10th Anniversary as Communications Technology EMS in China
China is increasingly perceived as a market and home of world class and leading original equipment manufacturers (OEM), besides being a manufacturing location.
Elcoteq was one of the first electronics manufacturing services (EMS) companies to recognize Chinese customer demand for local manufacturing and support services, establishing Elcoteq Dongguan and Elcoteq Asia Ltd. in 1999. This year, Elcoteq marks the tenth year anniversary of its Dongguan high-volume manufacturing plant and Hong Kong management support office in China. Elcoteq’s factories in China manufacture communications technology products such as wireless communications terminal products, home communications products, and network equipment. In 2000, Elcoteq opened an office in Beijing and was the first global EMS company to start manufacturing operations in the Chinese capital.
Today, Elcoteq Dongguan, in the Nancheng District of Dongguan, China, is one of Elcoteq’s three volume manufacturing plants in the Asia-Pacific region (the others are in Beijing, and India). To support the Dongguan operation, Elcoteq Asia Ltd was set up as a customer center in Hong Kong and later developed with management support functions for all Elcoteq business area and group activities in the Asia-Pacific region. Additional Asian offices are in Seoul, South Korea and Tokyo, Japan. Elcoteq China operations have about 4,000 employees working in facilities that cover about 58,200 square meters. The plants support OEMs with fully integrated solutions comprised of collaborative design, manufacturing, engineering services, sourcing, demand and supply chain management, and after-sales services, including product repair and recycling, for the entire lifecycle of the OEM’s products.
Manufacturing services include box build and sub-assembly manufacturing for communications products such as mobile phones, (GSM, PHS, CDMA), LCD driver modules, data processing units, data storage units, and base station modules. The plants are ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14001:2004 certified and have Six Sigma, SA8000, and OHSAS18001 implementation. A new laboratory for design validation and verification was established by Elcoteq in Beijing, China. This service allows Elcoteq to perform important end-to-end services throughout a product’s development phase locally. The lab will support and shorten time-to-volume for its customers’ products.
The general manager of the Dongguan plant is Ms. Cecilia Liu who is Elcoteq’s first female general manager in Asia. “China represents one of the largest markets for handset OEMs,” said Ms. Liu. “We were fortunate to be one of the first EMS companies to enter the China market and will continue to support our customers with Elcoteq’s special know-how as a manufacturing services partner for wireless telecommunications products in China and other regions.”
In 2008, Elcoteq Dongguan was honored as one of the Top 100 Information Enterprises in Dongguan.
A local presence brings not only substantial logistics benefits, but also direct commercial advantages. Speed, accuracy, and reacting without delays are key competitive factors for quality and delivery reliability. Environmental soundness is another reason why Elcoteq wants to be close to its customers. With production volumes that are large it makes no sense to transport products all around the world. When the customers and component suppliers are in Asia, it makes sense to keep production there as well.
