Manufacturing Communications Technology Products in India

By Carsten Barth | November 11, 2008

manufacturing-comtech-prod-in-india.jpgWiMAX is one of the fastest growing wireless broadband technologies and India is the world’s fastest growing markets for wireless telecommunication. This combination offers a fertile location for the volume manufacturing of communications technology products.

by Petra Ebner and Arno Kolk, Elcoteq

To successfully manufacture WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) and communications technology-related products in India, OEMs are looking for a number of things. These include technology expertise, sourcing, a global footprint, design support, and asset management.

Communication network products being manufactured in India by Elcoteq include wireless and wireline infrastructure products and equipment for enterprise networks. Products for wireless infrastructure are cellular base stations, microwave systems, plug-in units for mobile base stations, and antennas. For wireline infrastructure, products include ADSL multiplexers and other broadband network products, and enterprise network products such as switches for data networks. The WiMAX product mix ranges from customer premises equipment (CPEs) to remote radio heads (RRHs) and complete WiMAX base stations.

Investing in Experts

Technology expertise in these sectors requires years of experience and a substantial investment in the engineers who specialize in radio frequency and microwave frequencies and the accompanying challenges. Establishing a manufacturing plant involves a major investment in capital equipment. At these high frequencies, testing and measurement equipment and their operation all become more complex. Elcoteq has established complete Surface Mount Technology (SMT) manufacturing lines and radio frequency (RF) test and measurement capabilities in its Indian facility.

Component sourcing is another issue to consider before deciding on manufacture in India. The source from which parts are obtained affects not only their purchase price, but also the cost of delivery, time schedules and inventory demands. It also introduces the possibility of tariffs on imported components. If parts are available in India, both the reliability of the source and the quality of the parts must be determined, and quantity and delivery issues must be resolved. Linking up with an EMS partner that has a local supply network can save a lot of time and money and reduce cost of ownership.

Reaping Success from Online Banking and Mobile Device Marketing

By Carsten Barth | October 27, 2008

reaping-success-from-online-bank-2.jpgGE Money Bank Austria is headquartered in Vienna and has 35 other branches and around 500 employees. It specializes in consumer and online loans.

by Carsten Barth and Pertti Rönkkö

The bank provides retail sales financing for the customers of Ikea, Suzuki, Apple and other partners, and also engages in service cooperation with Allianz. Bank Manager Mr. Gürol Sari, who joined GE Money Bank in 2005, is delighted by his company’s success in online sales and tele and Internet marketing. Sari has achieved exceptional results in developing sales of consumer loans over the Internet and mobile phones.
Mr. Sari says that GE Money Bank branches used to look like old Viennese cafes. They are now state-of-the-art service institutions. The company’s new approach is well in evidence on its Internet site, too.
“We’ve modernized all our branches. Our staff has been trained by a team of coaches. We’ve focused especially on the quality of the advice we provide – after all, satisfied customers are the key to success. We’ve also extended our opening hours until six in the afternoon, which is unusual in Austria. In addition, we’ve set up a mobile customer advisor team and expanded our online functionalities.”

In the Internet, Personally

Mr. Sari says that GE Money’s online business has grown a whopping 800 percent. The bank has set up excellent online applications for its partners, such as furniture and appliance stores. These applications are so effective that financial advisors and salespeople simply can’t afford not to use them. He says that GE Money Austria has been able to develop and launch the first payment system for online sales (www.teilzahlung.at) in a very short timeframe.
“Consumers have also warmly welcomed our free car sales and leasing portal (www.meinauto.at) and our own service site (www.gemoney.at). These sites make it even easier for consumers to make decisions. 80 per cent of our new customers come to us through the Internet. Our existing clientele is also relying more heavily on the Internet as a source of information. We can state that half of all our business is tied to online marketing.”
According to Mr. Sari, mastering the rules of the game is the key to online success. The Internet must be an integral element in all marketing. He emphasizes that e-mail, SMS, telemarketing and other marketing tools that might even seem old-fashioned nowadays still have a role to play.
“We’re continuing to develop these tools, although the main thrust is on Internet marketing. But we also boost our mobile device marketing. We use SMS to send product information to customers, leave call requests and confirm appointments. We send background information to our own employees via SMS so as not to disturb ongoing negotiations.”

Tracking Technology

Mr. Sari says that the evolution of the Internet as well as mobile devices such as the Blackberry and the new iPhone open up massive new marketing opportunities. For this reason, it’s vital to keep track of the latest developments.
“Because this is of paramount importance to us, we get to grips with it thoroughly. We track customer behavior on our Internet site with extreme accuracy. Even the slightest changes are analyzed. We know that new innovations are constantly being introduced in Internet marketing. We keep ourselves abreast of them at all times.”
The future of mobile Internet and mobile devices will boost this trend. Internet and mobile device marketing will play a vital role for GE Money Bank’s marketing and customer relationship activities.

Elcoteq’s REACH approach featured in Technology Forecasters Inc Blog

By Carsten Barth | October 15, 2008

logo.gifWhy REACH blinds and boggles some, busies others
by Pam Gordan, Technology Forecasters Inc.  www.TechForecasters.com

Though the European Union’s REACH regulation is boggling some electronics-company managers trying to understand its implications, and blinding those not yet willing to face the most comprehensive legislation on chemicals ever introduced, the REACH regulation is busying companies such as Elcoteq. European-based electronics contract-manufacturer Elcoteq already has inventoried all chemicals used in their Hungarian, Romania, and Estonian plants, and systematically extracted from all suppliers of these chemicals a signature committing on-time product registration (pre-registration is through Dec. 1, 2008).

This week I was in Finland working with our clients at Elcoteq and Tellabs. Just as when I visited Nokia my first trip to Finland I noticed among top and middle management a fluent understanding of environmental strategy—a fluency prevalent at electronics companies in The Netherlands, Sweden, Germany, and elsewhere in Europe.

reach_seitenl1.jpg“We grew up in the forests and many of us have summer cottages that are not equipped with modern amenities, and so we learned to be practical—recycling everything we can and burning the rest for energy,” says Minna Aila, Elcoteq’s Director Corporate Responsibility based near Helsinki. “Environmental conservation comes naturally.” She says many global companies – particularly European ones – think of corporate responsibility as encompassing economic, social, and environmental issues–the triple bottom line. (About social responsibility, Aila says she hates the term giving back, “because it means that one is taking something away to begin with.”)

Elcoteq is embarking on the third of three corporate responsibility levels: The first was compliance, the second was realizing that steps beyond compliance can offer a competitive edge, and the third is integration of environmental and social strategy throughout the business. “I don’t know if a company has a DNA,” Aila adds, “but if it did environmental and social strategy would be in the DNA, or backbone, of thinking.” Environmental leadership at Elcoteq reports directly to the CFO, receiving ample corporate priority and commitment. “Environmental thinking has to be understood at the top management level,” says Aila.

Barrier-free cheering for Paralympics

By Carsten Barth | September 23, 2008

p1220282.JPGp1220264.JPGOne hundred Elcoteq employees raised their voices to cheer the athletes who participated in the Beijing Paralympic Games, held September 6-17, in Beijing China.  Selected by the Beijing Olympic Governing Committee, they were among the 1000 volunteers participating on the Paralympic cheerleading squad.

p1220294.JPG

Besides yelling slogans like, “Go Go athletes!”, they used sign language, made special gestures, and applauded together when singing, to make sure that there were no barriers to communicating the joy, excitement, and encouragement they felt to these special athletes. Every Elcoteq volunteer considered their selection an honor, and spent many hours in training, learning and practicing the presentation skills.

The Paralympics offered barrier-free facilities and transportation services for all athletes at the Paralympic Games.  Just as they did at the summer Olympic Games, these Elcoteq volunteer cheerleaders kept their promise that there would be no barriers to cheering and showing their best wishes to these special world-class athletes.
